YouTube Content ID
Collecting ad revenue from every video using your music.
What it is
Content ID is YouTube's system that fingerprints your recording and finds every video that uses it — yours, fan uploads, reactions, edits — and can monetize them, sending you a share of the ad revenue.
When you need it
As soon as your music is released and could appear in others' videos.
Usually accessed through a distributor or CID administrator that takes a percentage of the revenue collected. Verify current terms with your provider.
Where artists lose money
One of the single most-missed streams. If you never enable Content ID, all that ad revenue from videos using your song is simply not collected by you.
Enable it through one partner only
Content ID is typically enabled via a distributor add-on or a dedicated Content ID administrator.
Critical: do NOT have two partners both claim your catalog in Content ID at once — overlapping claims cause disputes and can freeze payouts. Pick one.
Overlapping Content ID claims from multiple partners cause disputes. Use a single CID partner per catalog.
It's the master, not the composition
Content ID here refers to your sound recording. Note the publishing/composition side of YouTube can also generate money via your publishing admin/PRO — a different pipe again.
